From its days known as the Harlem of the West, playing host to legends like Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, to the plethora of present-day venues and artists that call the city home, Denver is a city for jazz-lovers. In the ‘30s through the ‘60s, jazz was the heartbeat of the historically Black Five Points neighborhood. Venues like the Casino Cabaret and the Rossonian Hotel soundtracked life in the historic corridor. Meanwhile stalwarts within the genre who graced the city's stages, like Ray Charles and Billie Holiday among other illustrious names, lifted Denver’s reputation as a jazz hub.

In the present day, the jazz tradition is alive and well in Denver. Modern clubs like Nocturne and Dazzle have drummed up a fervent following, while Jazz in the Park is a bona fide summer tradition that lights up City Park every year. That’s not to mention the Denver Jazz Fest and Five Points First Friday Jazz Hop that brings fans out to the streets, echoing the culture of times past. Whether you’re a local who wants to tap into the city’s roots and rhythm or a visitor looking to connect with familiar sounds while in town, Denver’s jazz scene is a deep cut worth exploring.

Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club

Nocturne burst onto the scene in 2015, adding a touch of Gatsbian grandeur and lush Art Deco-inspired ambiance to the graffiti-covered alleyways of the River North Art District (RiNo). The upscale jazz and supper club is for the jazz purists, as it is the only venue in Denver that exclusively features the genre. The acts that come through this room stick around in four- to eight-week runs at the venue — an old school approach that allows the artists to develop and evolve their shows around the venue itself.

Dazzle

Dazzle, located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, is an institution in Denver’s jazz scene. Since 1997, Dazzle has been delighting its intimate audiences by regularly featuring local and touring acts in the jazz, blues, R&B and Latin music spaces. From jazz brunches to late-night quartet sets, Dazzle is the legacy venue worthy of its recognition as one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world. Take a seat in a cozy booth, order a glass of wine and let the show unfold in front of you for a perfectly relaxing and engaging evening show.

Spangalang Brewery

Many folks visiting Denver get the rundown of movers and shakers in Denver’s competitive craft-beer scene. Standing out from the crowd in a major way is Spangalng Brewery — a full-blown destination for the weekend warrior who wants their booze with a side of groove. Located in Five Points, Spangalang makes good on the history of the ground it occupies in the epicenter of the Harlem of the West, inviting local jazz favorites to frequent its outdoor plaza, with nights ranging from the Latin Jazz Experience to Isaac Sinclair Soul. It's fitting, too, given that Spangalang is slang for the bread-and-butter jazz rhythm section — it’s an integral part of this brewery's experience.

Two Moons Music Hall

Two Moons Music Hall is one of the newest joints in town, conveniently located in the thick of the entertainment options of RiNo. While eclectic bookings are the norm here, their collaboration with KUVO Jazz makes for some truly special moments in the jazz scene. The KUVO Jazz Odyssey, as it's been dubbed, curates a forward-thinking lineup comprised of emerging, innovative and boundary-pushing voices as a way to enrich community and elevate local and national artists pushing the jazz genre to new heights.

Herb’s Hideout

Iconic and understated, Herb’s Hideout is one of downtown Denver’s hidden-gem jazz venues. Preceded by their dual reputation as a LoDo nightlife beacon, packed to the gills with patrons who want to cut loose on its dance floors on the weekend, Herb’s weekday activities have made it a must-visit in the jazz world. While nearly every night is bursting at the seams with music, Monday and Tuesday nights are built for the jazz aficionados. Monday nights are led by the inimitable and influential composer and pianist, Vlad Girshevich. And on Tuesday nights, Herb’s delights with their B3 Jazz Jam, an open house for musicians to jump in with Herb’s house band and get their improv fix.

City Park Jazz

Looking to get outside for some jazz stylings? Look no further than City Park’s Jazz in the Park series. By all accounts, a summer staple for Denverites, Jazz in the Park ushers in big crowds who catch the bigger bands and the beaming summer sun as it kisses the City Park lake, making for a truly quintessential Denver summer experience. With a palpable roster of bands who play every Sunday all summer long, if you’ve yet to make it to Jazz in the Park, do you even like the genre?

Denver Jazz Fest

While relatively new in its own right, Denver Jazz Fest pulls out all the stops as it creates a large-scale event that properly honors the city’s jazz roots. The urban backdrop opens up the art form to traditional and unconventional spaces and venues from Denver up to Boulder, into the historic Five Points neighborhood and beyond. Not to mention, with Five Points Jazz Fest on an extended hiatus, Denver Jazz Fest more than fills the gap; it hits the sweet spot as a new tradition and then some.

Meadowlark

No Denver jazz venue list is complete without mentioning Meadowlark. The hip RiNo venue is buzzing with DJs, and local band jams most nights of the week, but it's Monday night that percolates with life during Meadowlark’s free jazz night. A local’s favorite, jazz at Meadowlark often feels like a best-kept secret, wherein those in the know make their pilgrimage every week to catch a beat. The vibe is loose and without pretense, much like the freeform flow that’s made an impression in the modern jazz resurgence. For Denver, Meadowlark epitomizes this new wave.
