Denver’s public transportation is easy, inexpensive and convenient. You can get pretty much anywhere in the Mile High City by rail or bus. Below, you’ll find some info and tips on how to take advantage of Denver’s public transportation. Bonus: Youth ages 19 and under can ride buses and light rail for free.
Planning to get around Denver by bus or light rail? Start by visiting the Regional Transportation District (RTD) website for up-to-date routes, fares and schedules.
Prefer a real person to help plan your trip? Give RTD Customer Care a call at 303-299-6000. Just let them know where you’re starting, where you’re headed, and when you want to go — they’ll walk you through the best route, fares and even how to get back (Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
The 16th Street MallRide is a free shuttle that's easy to hop on and off while exploring downtown.
Denver's Union Station is both a working transit station and a dining and entertainment hub.
RTD's light rail connects the city with nearly 100 miles of rail line.
Once you’ve planned your trip, it’s time to head to your stop! Look for red and white RTD signs — these list which bus routes stop there, so double-check that your route number is included. Pro tip: Your return stop is often just across the street.
As the bus approaches, check the digital sign above the windshield to confirm it’s the right one. Wait for it to come to a full stop, then hop on!
Important: RTD drivers don’t carry or make change, so be sure to have exact fare in cash (bills or coins), or purchase a pass or ticket in advance. If you’ll need to switch buses, ask your driver for a transfer slip to continue your ride without paying again.
Once you’re on board, settle in and enjoy the ride. The driver will announce upcoming stops, but you might need to pull the “Stop Requested” cord above your seat to signal when you’re ready to get off. If there are two doors, use the rear door to exit, and always wait for the bus to pull away before crossing the street.
Getting around the city has never been easier, thanks to Denver’s RTD light rail system. Whether you’re heading downtown, exploring neighborhoods or catching your flight, here’s what you need to know to ride like a local.
Start with a little planning.
Check out RTD’s website for routes, fares and maps. Need help? Call RTD Customer Care at 303-299-6000 — they’re happy to walk you through your trip.
Find your station.
RTD light rail stations are easy to spot, thanks to their open design, public art and red-and-white signs. Many offer free Park-n-Ride lots and are also served by buses or FlexRide service.
Buy before you board.
Unlike the bus, you’ll need a ticket or pass before boarding the train. Use the vending machines at each station — your ticket is automatically time-stamped. Already riding the bus? Show your transfer or pass when boarding (you may need to pay a small fare upgrade depending on the zones you cross).
Hop on!
Check the electronic sign on the front of the train to make sure it’s the right line. Wait until the train comes to a complete stop. Doors will either open automatically or at the press of the lighted green button. Let others exit before you board.
Understand how fares work.
The light rail system is divided into four fare zones: A, B, C and Airport. Your fare is based on how many zones you travel through — so plan ahead and check signage at your station for details.
The airport train (A Line) is the easiest way to travel between Denver Union Station and Denver International Airport (DEN) without a car. Trains depart every 15 minutes during peak hours, and the ride takes about 37 minutes.
